Millar Coaches at 2019 World Team Training Camp

In preparation for the National Compound Archery Team’s participation in The Netherlands in June, Kathleen Millar (women’s coach) and Sean McKenty (head coach) lead a national team training camp hosted by Sean and Fiona in the Windsor area on May 13-14, 2019.

All women team members will be present for the registered tournaments and simulations.  For the men’s team, everyone  except for Brendan von Richter from Victoria will be present.

The men’s team of Brendan, Robbie Nott and Austin Taylor reprises the team that Kathleen led during the 2018 World Cup at Salt Lake City.  The women’s team sees the return of Fiona McClean and Fiona Maude, along with Katie Roth.  It will be a solid, experienced team.

2019 Candle-Masters Congratulations

There was no dominant archer this year in the advanced classes.  And though we had a lot of arrows pass through the flame, only the following archers put it out without touching the candle itself.  One candle each for:

Compound archers

Emma McMillan, Hannah Rousseau, Bill Mackey and Hester Grodde.

Recurve archers

Pam Leclair, Bob Kerr and Luke Seldenthuis

Congratulations to all students!

Mohamed El-Halawani shoots PB at February WA18m

Congratulations to all our participants as we welcomed 3 new archers to our tournaments.  Welcome back to Crystal Foster who has been unable to shoot tournaments for over a year.

Special shout-out to Mohamed El-Halawani (SR M Rec) who shot a PB 552 on the round today.

Vic Kinsella, coach, mentor, gentle human being

KINSELLA, Victor Reid – After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Victor Reid Kinsella on July 14, 2018 at 87 years at St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital. Victor was pre-deceased by his loving wife Rita Kinsella (2013). He is survived by his children Victoria (Toni) Vanmillingen, Toni Corriveau, Thomas Kinsella and James (Debbie) Kinsella. Victor was the loving grandfather of nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.  We will hold the memories of this kind and loving man within our hearts and we will honour him by sharing these memories with each other and by doing something kind every day for anyone who needs it.  Memorial donations may be made to the Men’s Mission or the charity of your choice.

Vic Kinsella was a kind, generous archery coach and former President of the Federation of Canadian Archers (known now as Archery Canada).  Kathleen Millar worked with him and for him over many years – an inspiration and role model.  So much kindness and humour, and roses!

South Nation Archery Hosted National Paralympic Mixed Team Training Camp

Kathleen Millar and SNAC hosted the small, but important national team training camp June 25-28.  The National Para Mixed Team, comprising of Karen Van Nest and Kevin Evans, trained and simulated competition in preparation for a Paralympic World Ranking Event in the Czech Republic starting on June 30th.

As part of the pre-event camp, national Team Leader Duncan Crawford (PEI) attended as well.  Other team support members were able to attend also.

In order to simulate match play for Karen and Kevin, Kaity Horlock, Hannah Rousseau, Alexandra Paquette and Robin Horlock all participated in the Round Robin and Super-team eliminations.  Thank you for volunteering!  To thank our volunteers, Larry grilled a great smorgasbord of delights to go with all the salads.

Good luck to our Canadian Paralympic Mixed Team in the Czech Republic!

Violet Lovelace – a strong woman in a male-dominated industry

Violet was born in Jedburgh, SK on August 28, 1936. Her family moved to Yorkton when she was four years old, where she attended elementary school and Yorkton Collegiate for high school. In her youth she was involved with the United Church Youth Club and C.G.I.T and eventually became troop leader. Violet earned her teaching degree at Moose Jaw Teacher’s College in 1955.

In 1972, Violet and her husband Atley moved to a quarter section of land just east of Regina on Highway #1, where they lived and set up their archery business. She was involved daily in its operation.  Violet also participated in archery tournaments and collected a large number of trophies. She taught elementary school at Burke School in Yorkton and Pilot Butte Elementary School.

In 1974, Violet retired from teaching to work full-time in their archery business. In 1996 they built a lodge north of Norquay, where they spent their summers and ran an outfitting business. Violet was a great cook and grew a huge garden at the lodge.

Violet passed away peacefully in Sun City, Arizona (her winter home with her husband since 2001) on Tuesday, February, 27, 2018.
